Eye on Recruiting: Tyler McCulloch

Saturday UNM hosted their annual football camp. Albuquerque's Eldorado HS had two prospective D-I players in Tyler McCulloch and DT Willie Pounds.

This past Saturday the University of New Mexico held their 1 day "Air it Out" 7 on 7 and In The Trenches camp. I checked out eventual winner Eldorado (Albuquerque, NM) team as they were playing a team from Colorado in the 7 on 7 tournament there was a player on the field WR Tyler McCulloch that caught my eye immediately.

From what I can tell in a 7 on 7 game (no pads two hand touch) it looked like Ty has pretty good hands, was running the correct routes, and has the ability to jump high for the ball. During the entire 7 on 7 drills you could see McCulloch timing his jumps, as the Eldorado QB's would put the ball high in the air for him. It was obvious that McCulloch was one of the top players in the tourney as he continually drew double coverage and was able to fight it off.

Ty comes in at 6-5 195lbs and he said, he hasn't been timed in the forty this summer as he is coming off of a groin injury.

After camp I had a chance to speak to Ty and he said it best, "The strength of my game is my size, I can go up and get the ball." When asked what position he thought he fit in with at the D-I level McCulloch said, "I would like to play wide receiver, but I'm not sure I have the speed for it. Coaches including those here at UNM have told me I would make a nice slot TE, so we will see."

So what schools are recruiting Ty? "I'm looking at UNM… (New Mexico)State… a little bit. Tulane watched me practice, Louisiana-Tech, and other schools I have sent tape to have contacted me, but I have no offers as of yet."

I asked Ty what his plans were this summer to get better and to start getting those offers coming. "I have to work on my speed if I want to play receiver, and I'm working very hard in the weight room this summer as I would like to get to 215 lbs or so," he responded. "I want to show coaches that I can make plays at the next level. I really want to impress the coaches."

Showing up a little late this afternoon was Tyler's Eldorado teammate Willie Pounds who came to Saturday's camp strictly as an observer. I also had a chance to speak to Willie who holds offers from both the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State.

"I'm headed up to Colorado tomorrow for a full contact camp up there," said Willie. "I'll be back down for one of the day camps to run for the coaches later this week."

Colorado is hosting a team camp up in Boulder this week and Pounds told TheRedMenace.com "I expect to have an offer from Colorado after this weekend."

You have to like the confidence. And why not he is a big man at 6-3 295 lbs with a nice aggressive look and feel to him.  Pounds did say that he is working on his speed.
