Manning: We Lost Focus

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Linebacker Terrell Manning met the media following Wednesday's practice and discussed Saturday's matchup with Boston College.

From your perspective, what went wrong in the second half Saturday against Virginia Tech?
We lost focus. They came out and they started doing some things that we weren't used to seeing and we kind of got a little rattled and lost some focus. Nobody could really regain their composure throughout the rest of the second half.

What is the most important thing you guys can do to combat that?
We definitely relaxed with the 17-0 lead but at the same time we've played like that a couple times this year. We always play real good at the beginning, then have a slow time where teams have come back. Coach told us that would come back and bite us eventually and it did Saturday.

This week you don't have to worry as much about a running quarterback, how does that change your preparation, if at all?
It'll be fine. You have to have a short memory. You have to take the same approach though because you never know when a quarterback can break contain. You have to be ready to make any type of play whenever it presents itself so you have to come in ready to blitz, ready to get after the quarterback and make more plays this week.

What do you remember about last year's game in Chestnut Hill and what Montel Harris did?
It was cold. I didn't really play that much that game but I do remember him running all over us. I think he broke a record or something. It wasn't exciting, unless you were a BC fan. I didn't like it at all.

Have you watched any of that film from last year?
Not yet, but I'll probably watch some of it sooner or later. But it's not really interesting to me, they found a little kink in the defense and they used it last year and stuck with it the whole game.

Even though Saturday didn't turn out like you guys wanted, you are still 4-1. What is the mindset of the team?
It's the same mindset. We're happy about the situation still but it's always grind mode and we are always thinking like our backs are against the wall. We're happy but we're not backing off.

Coach O'Brien doesn't put much stock in beating Boston College, do the players talk about that at all?
Not really. It doesn't really interest us. It's a game just like any other game. We take the same preparation that we would take against anybody else. It's the same as if we were playing North Carolina. A lot of guys look at that as big game but this is the same way. We'll all be ready to play.

You said Boston College found a kink in the defense last year. Do you think they will be able to find anything similar this Saturday?
Let's put it this way, they're going to try it.
