NOTEBOOK: Irving's Big Day

NC State senior Nate Irving made sure his final home game was a memorable one as the star linebacker set a school record for tackles for a loss with eight in the Wolfpack's 38-3 win over Wake Forest.

Irving Sets Single-Game Tackles for Loss Record
Senior linebacker Nate Irving made his last game in Carter-Finley Stadium a memorable one. He ended the day with 13 tackles, including a career-high eight for loss. That tackle for loss total broke the school record of six, which was set by Mario Williams against Southern Miss in 2005.

Defense Stuffs Wake
The Wolfpack defense posted another outstanding effort in today's game. A week after giving up just 260 total yards (46 rushing yards) to Clemson, the "D" held Wake Forest to just 188 yards (the lowest total against a BCS opponent since the 2004 season finale against East Carolina - 140) and three points. Those three points today by Wake Forest came after the defense stopped the Deacons and forced a punt, but a roughing the punter call on the Pack gave Wake the ball back.

In the past two games, the Pack has allowed a total of just 17 points. That marks the fewest in back-to-back ACC games since the 1982 season when the defense allow just six points by Clemson followed by seven by Virginia in back-to- back wins.

Old Favorites Find Endzone
Today marked the first time since the Boston College game on October 9 that Jarvis Williams had scored a touchdown. It also marked the first time since that game over a month ago that Owen Spencer had scored on a reception. Those two players have now combined for 32 career touchdown receptions.

Wilson Moves to Second in ACC History
Russell Wilson passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more in today's win. He has now been responsible for 85 touchdowns in his career, moving up to the second-best mark in ACC history.

That mark is also the second-best mark in school history, as Philip Rivers holds the school and league marks with 112.

He passed Joe Hamilton of Georgia Tech, Shawn Moore of Virginia and Chris Weinke of Florida State today.

Wilson also reached the 300 yard passing mark for the 11th time in his career, including the seventh time this season, as he finished with exactly 300 yards today.

Washington Makes First Start
Sophomore James Washington got the starting nod at halfback today, marking the third tailback to start for the Wolfpack in 2010. Redshirt freshman Dean Haynes started the first eight games, true freshman Mustafa Greene started last week and Washington started today. Washington ended the day with 13 rushing yards and 36 yards on seven catches.

New Placekicker Starts for First time in 35 Games
For the first time in 35 games, a placekicker besides Josh Czajkowski started for NC State. Czajkowski, who injured his hamstring last week verus Clemson, had started a team-best 34 straight contests, dating back to the season opener of the 2008 campaign.

Freshman Chris Hawthorne got the nod in his stead today in his first collegiate game. He connected on his only field goal attempt, a 25-yard attempt in the first quarter. He was also a perfect 5-of-5 on PATs.

Spencer Tops 2,000 Career Receiving Yards
Senior Owen Spencer became only the fifth wide receiver in school history to post 2,000 career receiving yards, as his total of 138 on the day pushed his career numbers to 2,012.

Williams Moves up TD List
Senior wideout Jarvis Williams' four-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter marked the 19th score of his career. He is now just two touchdown catches away from tying Jerricho Cotchery (2000-03) for second in school history. Torry Holt (1995-98) holds the school record with 31 career TD receptions.

Seventh Regular Season Win
NC State has now posted seven wins in the regular season for the first time since 2003 (8).
