Much has been made of five-star junior defensive end Noah Spence's ties to NC State, but his admiration of the Wolfpack is also related to their play on the field this year.
Spence, a junior prospect at Harrisburg (PA) Bishop McDevitt, is a busy young man between school, his own football season and recruiting, but he is a fan of the college game as well. He keeps up with college football as best as he can, and when Pack Pride asked him what programs impressed him this year only one came to mind.
"Even though they lost (to Maryland) NC State impressed me this year," Spence said. "I didn't know they were going to do as well as they did. That's pretty much the one team that has really stood out to me this year."
Spence went on to say he does not have any favorites, nor has he been in contact with many college coaches lately. He said he lets his high school coach handle the recruiting process for the most part, at least so far.
"I haven't narrowed anything down yet but I do like them," he said of NC State. "I have to start visiting more (schools) before I can narrow things down."
Spence attended Penn State's game against Michigan earlier this year and he said the atmosphere really impressed him. He is now at 15 verbal scholarship offers and he was humbled by the most recent.
"Last week I just got a verbal offer from USC," he recounted. "That was definitely a big deal for me and my family. Growing up I thought that was one of the biggest schools you could go to."
Bishop McDevitt will be playing for the district championship this week, which means they are in the third round of the playoffs. On the season Spence has recorded 83 tackles and 20 sacks while forcing 10 fumbles.
"I've definitely gotten a lot faster and stronger. I've improved my moves, my speed rush and my pass rush," he explained. "I've learned how to use my moves better and when to use them."
Spence has been lining up mostly at defensive end this year, though sometimes his coaches have him standing up as an outside linebacker.
