Underwood Says He's Solid With UNC

NC State had hoped to get an official visit with Fuquay-Varina (NC) defensive tackle Shawn Underwood but that appears unlikely.

Fuquay-Varina defensive tackle Shawn Underwood was planning on taking an official visit to NC State but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

For a while the three-star prospect was seriously considering the Wolfpack. In the end, however, he decided that he wanted to stick with his pledge to the Tar Heels.

"I'm going to cancel my (official) visit to NC State," he said. "I just decided (North) Carolina's the place for me.

"I did a lot of thinking on my own. I ended up going to visit because I wanted to meet the new defensive line coach. I went and visited (Saturday) and it went well. We had an instant connection and all of that good stuff."

North Carolina's new defensive line coach is Brian Baker, formerly of the Carolina Panthers.

Underwood's decision to stick with the Tar Heels means the Pack might have to look in another direction at the defensive tackle spot.

NC State does not have any defensive tackle commitments in the Class of 2011, though recent verbal commitment and offensive lineman Joe Thuney from Ohio has said that he might end up playing defensive tackle for the Pack.
