NC State was intent on signing another linebacker in the class of 2011 so it was mission accomplished today when Loganville (GA) Grayson standout Michael Peek faxed in his letter of intent to the Wolfpack coaching staff.
The interest in Peek came after a monster senior season that saw the 6-2, 210 pound ‘backer tally 119 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four interceptions (one returned for a score) and five fumble recoveries. For his efforts he was named all-county and selected to play in the Gwinnett County all-star game.
Although he had originally committed to Navy, Peek flipped to NC State after an official visit to Raleigh last weekend. He told Pack Pride that the coaching staff sold him on the Wolfpack.
"The big thing for me is there is a lot of experience on the coaching staff," said Peek. "You can tell that. A bunch of the coaches, they've been together for a while.
"Coach O'Brien, he's a great coach and he really emphasizes not just playing football but you've got to be champions in the classroom, on the field and in the community. You know, I like that just because it's more than just football."
So how did the visit go?
"It was good. I love the area. It's similar to where I live. I like the people. I like the staff.
"Taylor Gentry was supposed to host me on my visit but I think he was sick. So Zach Gentry hosted me the first night and then R.J. Mattes hosted me the rest of the time. They just told me it was a good place with good people and good fans. They love it and said that NC State would definitely be the best fit for me."
Peek's path to NC State almost didn't happen after he missed the Wolfpack's camp last summer. However, NC State tight end's coach Jim Bridge reestablished contact recently and that helped pave the way for the Pack's latest commitment.
"Coach Bridge was recruiting me. I talked to them a little bit over the summer last year and I was supposed to go to camp but it ended up that I couldn't go. I kind of lost touch with them but they recently called me up and told me they were looking at me hard and they gave me an offer about a week ago."
Peek expects to line up at the SAM linebacker position for NC State.
