Wilkins Has Pack's Attention

Middle Creek DE Darius Wilkins had a breakout year in 2010 and now he's waiting for his first scholarship offer. NC State is heavily in the mix and Wilkins gives us his thoughts on the Wolfpack.

Two of the more frequent visitors at NC State's home games last year were Apex (NC) Middle Creek teammates WR Kevin Jones and DE Darius Wilkins. While Jones will reportedly move on to Hargrave Military Academy to shore up his academics as a senior, Wilkins will be hoping to help the Mustangs build on their second round playoff run from a year ago.

At 6-3, 210 pounds Wilkins has a great frame and impressive upside. As a junior he boasted nearly 100 tackles, eight sacks and an interception en route to all-conference and all-area honors.

To date, Wilkins is still awaiting his first scholarship offer but he has attracted the attention of schools from around the southeast region. Pack Pride talked with him recently and got the latest on the colleges showing interest.

"Recruiting's going pretty good right now," said Wikins. "I got the invite to the junior day at State and one at Duke. I'm hearing from Clemson, Duke, NC State, UNC, Auburn and I got a letter from Florida recently. I haven't gotten any offers yet but I would say NC State seems like they're the closest. They seem to be recruiting me the hardest."

So what does he like about the Wolfpack?

"I think I fit in over there pretty well," he said. "They like getting after the quarterback. I like pass rushing so that's probably a pretty good fit for me. Coach Archer is the coach that is recruiting me for State."

Wilkins says he plans to enjoy the recruiting process for awhile but knows what will be important when it comes time to make a decision on his college future.

"I'll probably wait a while before I make a decision so I can see what everybody is bringing to the table. I'm just looking for somewhere that I can build my skills up because ultimately I'm trying to go to the NFL. That's been my lifelong dream."

For now, Wilkins says he has three schools at the top of the list although that's certainly open for change over the course of the year.

"I really like Clemson and also State and UNC," he said.

Wilkins added that he plans to attend one day camps at all of those schools later on in the year.
