Wolfpack Among Nixon's Favorites

Pack Pride checks in with Norfolk Christian (VA) wide receiver Mario Nixon and has the latest on his recruitment.

It might be a stretch to say NC State is at the very top of Mario Nixon's list but that might not be too far from the truth.

The Norfolk Christian School wide receiver picked up an offer from the Wolfpack last month. He had previously picked up offers from in-state schools UVa and Virginia Tech, and now schools like Vanderbilt and the Naval Academy have offered as well.

Trying to figure out what coaches love about Nixon isn't rocket science. At 6-4 and 210-pounds he has size, and that's something not even the best coaches can teach. He's a good down field threat and has really been coming into his own over the past couple of years.

Last month Pack Pride reported that NC State had offered Nixon. While there has only been minimal contact between the Wolfpack and Nixon since then, the mutual interest is still very high it seems.
"I still haven't visited down there but I've known the recruiting coach for about four weeks and I like what they've said," Nixon explained. "I like the school. It seems like a real good school. I want to get down there and check it out."

That may seem somewhat vague but there's only so much that can be said prior to a prospect's first visit to a school. Nixon went one step further and grouped the Pack in along with some others at the top of his list.

"I would say UVa, Virginia Tech, NC State and probably Vanderbilt are at the top," Nixon stated.

He denied some reports that Virginia Tech is his clear favorite, though it does seem obvious that the Hokies are in a very good position with Nixon. He was recently at Virginia Tech's spring game and even though he was already high on Frank Beamer's program going into the trip, it was an eye-opening experience.

"That was good. That went real well. I've never seen 40,000 people at a spring game," Nixon said. "I would say they're one of the top schools I'm looking at."

Every school recruiting Nixon is telling him he would play wide receiver at the college level. We might have to wait a while to find out what he plans on doing.

"I'm going to make my decision on Signing Day," Nixon said.
