State Offers Jersey Linebacker

NC State has offered Absecon (NJ) linebacker Dan Mastromatteo although Rutgers leads early. Will the Pack have time to get in the race?

Dan Mastromatteo has long considered Rutgers his favorite but other schools are trying to get into the mix.

One of the schools vying for Mastromatteo's interest is NC State.

That's only a recent development. In fact, prior to last week the Wolfpack hadn't had any contact with the 6-2, 215-pound Absecon (NJ) Holy Spirit linebacker.

That changed dramatically last Friday, when Mastromatteo learned he had picked up another offer, his sixth of the recruiting process.

"They just offered (on Friday)," Mastromatteo told Pack Pride over the weekend. "I talked to a coach the other day when they offered. That was the first time I had talked to them. I talked to the special teams coach and recruiting coordinator (Jerry Petercuskie).

"It was really a surprise because it came out of nowhere. I really like the way they run their program. I like the way it seems like they do things."

The Pack, like everyone else, is recruiting Mastromatteo as a linebacker. Rutgers, BC and Cincinnati are the other schools from major conferences that have offered him and some other schools, including Miami and Alabama, are showing serious interest and indicating that they may be willing to offer later in the process after they have had the chance to evaluate him more.

While Rutgers has been, and remains, Mastromatteo's favorite, he cautions that he isn't quite ready to make a decision. He wants to hear what other schools, including NC State, have to say. Once he hears each school's pitch and takes all the visits he wants to he will make his decision.

"I'm just going to wait until the end of May, see how many more offers I get and then narrow things down from there," he concluded.

Scout.com has rated Mastromatteo a three-star prospect.
