At 6-6 and 240-pounds Mike Roberts has the build of a defensive end or even a potential offensive tackle.
Some might be surprised to learn that he is more of a pass catcher than anything. Roberts has a knack for using his big frame well to position himself between defenders and the ball. He can get down field surprisingly well for a football player of his size and he's good at catching the ball.
NC State recently offered the Cleveland (Ohio) Benedictine standout and the Pack would love to see him wearing the Red and White.
"I got that offer a few weeks ago," Roberts told Pack Pride. "They just started sending me updates about what they're doing and how their football program is. Then they started writing me handwritten letters. I didn't really expect them to offer me so that was kind of a shock."
Maybe it shouldn't have been one. Roberts had already received offers from UConn, Louisville, Ohio and Toledo and his name is starting to generate some buzz in recruiting circles.
NC State assistant coach Don Horton made the long trip out to Cleveland to Roberts' school, and it was a sign that the Pack was very interested. Roberts enjoyed seeing that.
"I know a little bit about their football program. I don't really know anything about the (academics) but I know where they're located and all. It's a school I have interest in. I'd like to visit. That's something I'd like to do. I have a lot of people up here at my school that would be willing to take me down there sometime," Roberts said.
Roberts said location probably will not be a big factor in his decision. He wants to choose the school that will give him the best chance of succeeding while in college and after he has graduated.
"I'm going to be looking at the environment and just finding out if it feels right," he said. "Also, the coaching staff and how they take me in. Then just the way they play football. I'll look at the stats of the tight ends."
Last fall Roberts caught about 45 passes for 450 yards and a touchdown, so he was a consistent threat on offense.
Cincinnati and Syracuse are schools that haven't offered but are showing a lot of interest. He used to be in good contact with LSU but that has fallen off somewhat of late.
"I don't really have any favorites," Roberts explained. "I haven't really had a chance to see any schools."
