Gottfried: "I'm So Excited"

NC State head coach Mark Gottfried was on 620 AM this morning discussing his program with Mark and Mike of The Insiders.

Mark Gottfried Interview

"It's been phenomenal."

"Our staff, myself, our families... we've been hard at work and it's been a great transition."

"When I looked at this job... this is different than the other ones, and I had some other opportunities. The tradition, the fanbase, the league, Debbie Yow... to me, those were all positives."

"It's a great time where I think this program can be as good as anybody in the country. Period."

"That's our job. We've got to be able to take the resources here and sell it to young people and make sure we build the kind of program this place deserves."

"I felt like it had all the potential... I'm so excited."

"We want to do something special here. It's not going to be easy and it will take a little time, but that's our goal and that's our hope."

"This is a year where we've got a few pieces. There's not a lot and we're not deep, and we're not a team that is going to contend, I don't know for a whole lot of things. But, I like this team, I like how they've come on board."

"It's going to take a little bit of time to get this group's mentality changed."

"We have to have a great recruiting year for the next couple of years."

"There was obviously great tradition and history at UCLA, but it had been since 1975 when they won a championship. We wanted our players to understand the history."

"It's very similar here. We've got great tradition and history at NC State, but our players we recruit and have here need to walk through the doors on the front end and understand that the goal is to win a national championship."

"Lorenzo Brown will be our point guard. I've known him since he's been in high school. I've got a lot of faith in him. I've got a lot of confidence in him, and I believe that he's going to blossom like a flower in the springtime."

"We've signed a young guy that fits us perfectly for this one year, Alex Johnson... he's taking advantage of the new rule where he can come in and play and be here one year in graduate school as a backup guard. Maybe play alongside him too at times, he's a very good shooter."

"This is a different element all together and it's exciting for me... when I was there we had great teams, we were ranked No. 1 in the country, but football was so popular."
