Lorenzo Charles Killed In Bus Crash

RALEIGH, N.C. — Lorenzo Charles, a former NC State basketball star and member of the 1983 National Championship team, was killed on Monday in a bus wreck on Interstate 40.

Lorenzo Charles, a former NC State basketball star and member of the 1983 National Championship team, was killed on Monday in a bus wreck on Interstate 40.

The wreck occurred around 5 p.m. on Monday afternoon according to WRAL news. Charles was the driver of the bus, which belongs to a car service based out of Apex.

"The entire Wolfpack family is devastated to hear the news about Lorenzo Charles," said NC State head coach Mark Gottfried. He holds a special place in Wolfpack history and in the hearts of generations of fans. We just reconnected with him last week and our staff was stunned to hear this terrible news."

Charles scored the game-winning dunk against Houston to propel the Wolfpack to the 1983 National Championship. Charles scored 1,535 career points in his four seasons with the Pack.

He was a second-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks in the 1985 NBA Draft.
