Class of 2004: Martel Thatch

Greensboro (NC) Dudley Safety Martel Thatch has picked up some solid regional offers early in the recruiting season.

"I'm loooking at Virginia, North Carolina, NC State, Wake, Clemson, and South Carolina," Martel told StateFans. "All of them have offered me except State and Wake Forest."

Playing alongside national targets Demario Pressley and Jamaal Edwards, Thatch's Dudley team is considered one of the most talented football squads in North Carolina. Last year they came up just short in the state finals.

"We did good," he said. "We made it to the championship game but lost by one. I think we will win it all this year."

"Last season I made All-Conference and had 90 tackles, 9 interceptions, and returned 3 of them for touchdowns."

It's going to be a busy summer for the 6-foot-2 180 pound safety, as he's camping at every school on his list.

"I'm camping at UNC, Virginia, Wake, State, Clemson, and South Carolina," Thatch said. "I know I'll be going to the Shrine Bowl Combine, but I don't know which one yet. I don't think we are going to make the NIKE Camp though."

It's obvious that Martel has some interest in the Wolfpack, with them making his final list although they have yet to offer.

"Yea, I like State. They just haven't recruited me hard though. It's close to home and they have a good team. I haven't had a chance to see their facilities either."

If NC State wants to land Thatch, they are going to have to overcome a sizeable lead by two conference foes.

"It's sort of a tie between UNC and UVA right now," Thatch noted. "They have recruited me hard and I feel comfortable with them."

"Carolina is close to home and they have a good coaching staff. I think they are on the rise with the players they have coming in."

"I like the coaches at Virginia, and I can tell they want to win. It's a good school and I loved the campus. They are also recruiting me the hardest."

Martel could be the first Dudley prospect to commit. "I think I'm going to decide early, and definitely before my season starts."
