McCalister Favors Five

Clemmons (NC) West Forsyth defensive end Alex McCalister continues to add scholarship offers and NC State, the first school to extend an offer, remains in the mix.

The offers came out of nowhere last month, with Notre Dame, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia Tech coming after West Forsyth High (Clemmons, N.C.) defensive end Alex McCalister.

And now that the 6-foot-6, 215-pound McCalister took time to digest the flurry of active and interest, he is thinking about official visits.

"I'm looking into (Notre Dame), and I know I'm going to take an official up there," McCalister said. "I want to go up there and see how it is."

McCalister said he is yet to set a date for an official visit to South Bend, Ind., but he wants to make early in the season so he can get a feel for the school and meet some of the other coaches. He is being recruited by defensive line coach Mike Elston.

"He's cool. He's more about business, and getting it done," McCalister said. "He said he's a worker. That's what it looks like. I'm ready to go up there and find out about the other coaches."

McCalister is being recruited to play outside linebacker/pass rusher in the Irish's 3-4 defense, and thinks he can do his most damage as a player in that role.

"I'll play both this year, so it doesn't matter to me," McCalister said. "I just know in the 3-4 I'd get a couple more sacks."

Although he doesn't have a steadfast top 5, McCalister said he does have a few thoughts on how it could shape up.

"If I had a top five it would include it would be Florida, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, N.C. State," McCalister said. "After I make my visits, I think I can make a decision."

But the most interesting aspect of McCalister's recruitment is how it exploded. He entered the spring without any offers, and is now approaching 20.

"N.C. State came and saw me work out and asked me the same thing," McCalister said. "I said, ‘I don't know. You're the first.' It was moving real fast (in June). I didn't expect it to happen this way. I thought I'd get an offer and go (visit) the school, but I didn't think I would get them all at once."
