Godby High School running back Reggie Davis from Tallahassee, Florida had three visits scheduled this past January, NC State, Boston College, and Indiana. He only got to one, NC State. "When I went up there, I just liked what I saw. The team and the coaches really committed to me. The coaches called me a lot and told me that Raleigh was the place to be. I cancelled my other visits. I knew it was NC State definitely. I committed."
The commitment followed a quick recruitment process by the Pack. It all began when Godby upset Clay County (21-17) which featured fellow Wolfpack signee Luke Lathan. "It all started when we played Clay County. NC State was down watching Luke Lathan. I had a real good game. Real good. I sent in some film and they (NC State coaches) told me they liked my style and speed and how I handled myself on the field."
According to Davis, he will be used as a running back once he gets up to Raleigh. "Coach Portee has talked to me about running back. They have asked me if I had good hands and I told them yes. I use to play wide receiver when I was younger. I have been working hard knowing I got to go up there. I need to shine."
The hard work includes playing basketball and running track for the cougars. "I've been working out, lifting and running trying to get stronger and faster. I ran a 4.4 this spring. I will use their (NCSU) work-out program when schools out. I hope to get up there in August, so I'll need to be ready."
Godby finished the season with a 6-4 record and just missed the play-offs. Davis rushed for 1,597 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior for Coach Shelton Crews. "We were a very young team and we had a young quarterback and line. It was a tough at times."
Davis made the annual spring game in Raleigh this year and he liked what he saw. "I liked their aggressive play on defense. Their style of offense is something I can see me fitting into. They don't just run or just pass. They mix it up well."
Reggie has made a few friends along the way with his fellow signees. Besides Luke Lathan who he played against, he also has met OL Kalani Heppe and Chad Green. "I met Kalani and Chad. Both were there when I visited. I saw Chad at the spring game and we talked about rooming together."
Davis looks to be a full qualifier upon graduation. "My core class grades are real good. I just made the honor roll. I have the score on the ACT as well."
Reggie Davis could see early playing time for a thinly manned Wolfpack backfield. TA McLendon and Josh Brown are 1-2 on the returning depth chart. Tramain Hall could also see some action in the backfield.
