NC State wasn't hosting just 2012 prospects this past weekend as Raleigh (NC) Word of God point guard Josh Newkirk, one of the state's top recruits in the 2013 class, attended the football game against Liberty.

"I went over to State with my dad for the football game," said Newkirk. "It was good, real good. The fans showed me love... I like it there. It was good being at State.

"That was the first game I went to this year, but we went to some last year."

What stood out the most to Newkirk about the trip?

"I just love the atmosphere," he said. "I love being around NC State and the Wolfpack fans. It was fun being there."

Prior to leaving campus he had a chance to talk again with the Wolfpack coaches.

"I had a good talk with them," he said. "They told me how the team is going to be, and they plan on having an up-and-down offense. They told me that I would be a good fit for what they want to do."

Scout.com has tabbed Newkirk the No. 17 point guard and the No. 70 prospect overall in the 2013 class. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder is explosive with the ball in his hands and capable of scoring in transition or in the half court.

He already holds offers from NC State, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Indiana, and App. State, but three programs stick out at this point with one holding the early advantage.

"Really it's NC State, North Carolina, and Miami," said Newkirk. "That's it for now. NC State is now my leader. I'm building a relationship with coach Gottfried, and I just like being around the school. I'm starting to feel real comfortable with them."

Does Newkirk have a timeframe for making a decision?

"I'm going to let this year go by and after my season I'm thinking about making a decision."
