Pettway Planning Visit to NC State

SMU commitment Khalil Pettway is planning to take an official visit to NC State. Pack Pride has the latest on the talented linebacker's recruitment.

It's not over until it's over, or until February at least. More and more that old saying is characterizing the recruiting battles of today.

Verbal commitments usually lead to written commitments but not always. Sometimes a better offer comes along and that shakes things up.

In the case of Khalil Pettway, a 6-4, 205-pound outside linebacker from Culver City, California, NC State is hoping they can change his mind on an earlier decision he made. Back in July, Pettway committed to SMU, a rising program from Conference USA.

Now Pettway is considering an offer from NC State.

"I'm still committed to SMU, but I'm looking at NC State too," Pettway told Pack Pride.

Pettway is trying to set up an official visit to SMU but he'll also be taking an official to NC State. Those likely won't be the only two schools Pettway will see as he hopes to take all five of his official visits before all is said and done. He's just not sure where he'll be taking those final three trips to.

He told Pack Pride that it will take a great visit to overcome the Ponies, but NC State seems to be in good shape.

"I just like how NC State says I'm their number one linebacker," Pettway said. "They make North Carolina seem like a real nice place. I just want to get out there and see how I like it."

NC State started recruiting Pettway before his junior season ended so the coaches have built a good relationship with him in that time. He's comfortable with the guys on the staff, especially Mike Reed, and is looking forward to visiting Raleigh.

West Virginia and Washington State are two other schools that are recruiting Pettway. The Cougars offered him not long ago.

Culver City just won their first game last Friday by a 51-28 score.

Pettway is a three-star prospect and ranked the No. 71 outside linebacker in the country.
