Rising Junior "Loves" the Wolfpack

Lynchburg (VA) Shooting Guard Jose Garcia has been playing great on the AAU circuit recently, and the rising junior could be making a college decision over the next few months.

"We played in the Bob Gibbons Invitational this weekend at the University of Virginia and two weeks ago we played at the Jayhawk Tournament in Kansas," Garcia told us. "I made the All-Tournament team at the Jayhawk Tournament and we finished third. For the Gibbons tournament I did good, but we only won 1 game."

Jose (pronounced Joe-Say) is a legitimate high-major prospect whom some consider a top 10 player in the sophomore class. He played this past season at Lynchburg (VA) Holy Cross, but could be transferring to a new school next year.

"I'm looking at playing at another high school where I can play better players and continue to develop my game. I'm looking at some schools like Blair Academy, Benedictine, Oak Hill, and Hargrave."

"I haven't played the game much and I think the only way I can better is to play the best. That's why I like playing AAU basketball."

Garcia is originally from Angola, but lived in Belgium before arriving in Lynchburg last August. While in Belgium he had a chance to watch a current Wolfpacker.

"I saw Illian Evtimov play when he was in Belgium and I like his game a lot. He's also a friend of mine now and he's a nice guy."

Because his favorite player is Michael Jordan, Jose has liked North Carolina a long time, but a recent trip to Raleigh opened his eyes to the Wolfpack.

"When I started playing basketball I would watch Michael Jordan and see how he plays then just do what he did. Because he went to North Carolina I liked North Carolina too, but when I went down to N.C. State for a visit I started liking them even more."

Jose visited NC State for the game against the Tarheels, and that trip left an impression on him.

"I loved it at NC State. Coach Sendek and Coach Phelps are great, and I loved the atmosphere during the game. I met the players and they were nice to me. It broke my heart when I read that one of them may try to go to the NBA because I want NC State to do well. I like them the most."

While Garcia has an obvious interest in the Wolfpack, they are going to have to hold off stiff competition for the terrific shooting guard.

"I also like North Carolina and Florida State," he said. "After them, schools like Wake Forest and Virginia are good too. I want to play in the ACC because my game fits it well."

"I really liked Coach Doherty at North Carolina and they recruited me hard before he left. I just did get to meet Coach Williams two weeks ago and he said they liked my game, but I don't know how much he will recruit me."

"Florida State has told my AAU coach that I'm their #1 shooting guard target for my class. Coach Hamilton is a great guy, but I haven't been able to visit their campus yet. I would like to before making a decision."

Because he's only a sophomore, no school has officially laid an offer on the table, but Jose feels they could be coming shortly. Could a verbal commitment follow?

"I really think NC State and Florida State are close to offering me a scholarship. They have both said so, and as soon as I get those offers, I may try to commit."

Jose did say that his visit to NC State for the North Carolina game could help him make an early decision.

"That game against North Carolina could help me make an early decision. It just felt like a family and that will always be with me."
