Rice put on a show at the Virginia Tech NIKE Camp this past weekend, where he ran a 3.83 shuttle and had a vertical jump of 37.8 inches, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in those categories. It's that type of athleticism which he can offer a college program.
"I'm a pretty good athlete that can do some things. I also ran a 4.5 at the Shrine Bowl combine, so they know I'm pretty fast straight ahead as well."
Last season, Chase played Linebacker for Coach Bobby Poss at Asheville (NC) Reynolds. He finished the year with 123 tackles while leading the Rockets to a 14-1 record and 4-A State Championship. Will he continue to be a linebacker at the next level?
"I'm not sure right now, because schools are recruiting me at a couple of places. I know Tennessee, Duke, and Florida State are still looking at me as a linebacker. NC State and Virginia Tech like me as a Rover/Strong Safety-type player."
So what programs are on Rice's list at the moment?
"I'm looking at Tennessee, NC State, Florida State, Virginia, Carolina, Duke, and Florida. Duke is the only one that has offered so far, but the others probably will once I camp with them. I'm going to do one-day camps at each school on my list, including the Florida schools."
With such a long list, surely several teams stick out above the rest.
"Well, I guess you can say Tennessee, [NC] State, and Florida State do. I just like those three programs a lot."
Committing early has been the norm recently in recruiting and could that be the case here?
"If one of the top schools on my list choose to offer early then yes it's possible. I would like to do it because the pressure will be off with choosing a college and I can concentrate on my senior year. I would do it if it was the best thing to do at the time."
