Coates Makes the Switch

NC State has landed a commitment from Pomfret (MD) McDonough standout CB Marchez Coates.

NC State added another important piece to the recruiting puzzle when they landed a verbal commitment from Pomfret (MD) McDonough standout CB Marchez Coates. Coates initially committed to Pittsburgh back in July but had a change of heart after a recent unofficial visit to NC State. He talked about his decision with Pack Pride.

"Yes, I committed to State," said Coates. "State was just a better fit for me. I came down a few weeks ago for a visit and it was nothing against Pitt. I love the coaches. I love Pittsburgh, period. It was just a better fit for me.

"I just went down for the Central Michigan game. It was great. The coaches were cool, the players were cool and I had a chance to talk to Earl Wolff. I loved the atmosphere and the campus there."

Another factor that played a part in the Wolfpack's favor was a couple of family connections.

"I've got a lot of cousins that live down in Raleigh and I've always been a State fan but I just felt like it was a better fit for me. I'll probably set up my official visit down the road but I plan to take a trip down there this weekend because State's playing Carolina."

Coates was recruited by defensive line coach Keith Willis but actually made his commitment to DB coach Mike Reed.

Rated a three star prospect and the No. 52 cornerback in the nation by, Coates has tallied four touchdowns at wide receiver. He's also added 80 tackles and two interceptions, including one that was returned 70 yards for a score. Coates will play cornerback at NC State and will get a shot at kick returner.
