O'Brien: "It's Their Choice To Make"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media following Thursday's practice to discuss Saturday's game with Boston College.

Tom O'Brien

Do you think the team has put the Carolina win behind them?
I think they've pushed through this week and worked hard. That's what I've told them, they've got to decide who they are going to be. Are they going to be the two teams that lost after the Carolina one or the team that won after a Carolina win and ended up going to a bowl game. It's their choice to make.

Will you have R.J. Mattes this week?
I don't know, we're going to find out.

Have you had linemen in the past play three positions like Mikel Overgaard has had to do this year?
Yes, Gary Gregory did it for us last year. Since we've been here it's happened. I've never experienced it until I came here, with moving guys around like that.

What did you work on this week?
We tried to be a better football team and look at what Boston College does.

Every week things change... what tendencies are, what formations are, what personnel groups are, what they do. It's the same thing on defense. How they play defense changes every week.

You have to be prepared to play the Xs and Os you're going to have to face this week.

Do you expect to see their backup quarterback some?
I don't have any idea. We've prepared for it.

Unlike Florida State, we're aware of it. We have a plan if it does happen that they play him.

What is your reaction on the Joe Paterno dismissal?
I don't have anything to add to that. I think it's a tragic situation. It's best left at that.

Not the way the Paterno thing went down, the whole Penn State. I'm not speaking specifically to that.

It has to feel good to have a scandal-free program.
Well, I went into a program where there was a gambling scandal, so I've been a part of it. I've been a part of cleaning one up and realize it's not a place you want to be.

You work hard everyday and you hope you do the right thing.
