Locker Room Report: Mark Gottfried

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media following tonight's win over Princeton.

"Well let me start off and say that I'm really proud of our guys and I'm proud of them for a lot of reasons. We're kind of in the infant stages with our team as far as building hopefully something great here but you need some games like this where you have to dig down, you have to overcome some obstacles."

"Princeton I thought in the first half was spectacular. They executed their offense, they made shots and the first 20 minutes they were the better basketball team but I like the fact that Scott Wood is out, Richard has foul trouble, Lorenzo's been ill and we didn't roll over. We played and we made some tough plays both offensively and defensively at key times and find a way to gut one out of there. For that hopefully this is something we can build on."

"It took us a half to really learn them and figure them out. I thought in the first half we made a lot of errors defensively and I though in the second half we were much better. Again, I think that's just playing them when you don't have a lot of time to prepare."

"I think we can learn. I tell our guys all the time you have to play through everything. Play through, that's kind of a phrase we use all the time. Play through officials, play through me if I jump up into you, play through a bad call, play through whatever. I thought our guys could have certainly accepted the fact they hey, Scott's not playing, Calvin is out and they did not do that. They competed, hard. Because of that you have to feel good."

"No, that's a feel. I've always felt as a head coach that's a feel. Sometimes if you're not as organize or you have a sense that your players are unsure, I'd take a timeout. But I felt comfortable with where our guys were mentally, with what they were in and I like to let them play at that point. Deshawn Painter, believe it or not, makes that shot consistently for us in practice. I like the fact that he never hesitated, he caught it and that's a good shot for him."

"Scott rolled his ankle pretty good. We'll learn more in the next 24 hours but if I was a betting man I would think that he's going to be out for a while. It changes a great deal because he's such a threat offensively and he's good defensively. You lose that perimeter shooter that those guys are hard to come by. If it happens that he can't play, hey, we gotta play. They aren't going to cancel the games this weekend."

"Unbelievable, I thought it was unbelievable. Monday, he was sitting over there with a boot on his ankle and he had some good swelling in there. Late Monday night Tyler Harris, Jordan Vandenberg and Lorenzo all ended up in the hospital because they got some bug, some virus. All three of those guys didn't come on Tuesday. Lorenzo hasn't broken a sweat since we played the other night and I thought he played with a lot of courage. 37 minutes and he made big shots on top of that, late in the game. That was quite a performance."

"I don't know about all that, I just know that with our team you have to find ways to win and dig down. I wasn't here last year, I don't know any of those things. All I know is, like I said when I started, in my mind we're in the infant stage and those things you want to teach, the things you want your players to buy into, these games like tonight help you because there was a reward at the end of the night. They did fight through and they get to feel good in the locker room. Hopefully we can build on that."
