Wolfpack Tied For First at 2003 NCAA Championship

After an outstanding year, NC State plays its way into a first place showing.

Coach Richard Sykes' men's golf team has been doing it all year. Ranked among the top-20 all season, and playing the nation's third toughest schedule, the 16th ranked Wolfpack is looking to win a national championship and show everyone what the golf community knows, but what most of the casual fans have missed: NC State is a great golf team. Led once more by the outstanding play of Jason Moon (72, t-5th) and Justin Walters (73, t-13th), the Wolfpack (299. +11) stormed to the top of the leaderboard Tuesday in round one of the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.

Moon has been hot of late, averaging 71.3 over his last 11 rounds with five of those rounds in the 60s. In his last three tournaments, Moon has finished in the top-10 twice with the third, a 17th place showing in the ACC Championship complementing his fifth place showing in the NCAA Central Regional. The ACC is one of the toughest conferences in the nation with six teams, including the Wolfpack, ranked in the top-25. All six of those teams are in the NCAA Championship field, and Moon is the top ACC finisher after the first day of play. Individually, the ACC has seven of the nation's top golfers among the top-15, including Walters, as four of the top-five are also from the ACC.

Walters has also shined during the first round, firing a 73. Walters has five top-five finishes of the year, and is a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist and a Byron Nelson Award Finalist.

Sophomore Sutton Barbrey also had a strong round and is currently tied for 44th with a 76, and Fernando Mechereffe fired a 78 to tie for 72nd. Stephen Lewton rounds out the Wolfpack five man lineup with an 82 and is tied for 117th.

The second round continues at 7am central time tomorrow. NC State finished six at last year's NCAA Tournament, with Walters finishing 6th and Moon finishing 38th. Moon is competing in his third straight NCAA Championship. Mechereffe finished 51st at the Scarlett Course in Columbus, Ohio.
