Freshman defensive end Art Norman has been a playmaker down the stretch for the Wolfpack.

In this Q&A, Norman spoke with Pack Pride about his recent play and Saturday's game with Maryland.

Coach O'Brien mentioned that a minor injury set you back some, but you have come on lately. Can you talk about that?
I had a little stinger, but I'm better now. I'm ready to go.

In the beginning of the season I was playing a lot of snaps because [Jeff] Rieskamp went down, but they moved Brian Slay to defensive end, and now that we have another defensive end I can get less snaps. That has helped me I think.

How do you think Brian Slay has played since moving from defensive tackle to defensiv end?
Great. I'm not going to lie, he has surprised me. He is a lot quicker than I thought he would be. He's done a great job for us at strong defensive end. He's making plays.

You guys seemed really confident against Clemson's offense. Did you feel comfortable with them going into the game?
We just studied them a lot and watched film. We watched more film and seemed to have a good feel for what they were doing.

Going in, I felt like we were going to play a great game.

You seem to make a lot of plays early in games. Do you think your quickness off the edge catches the offensive linemen by surprise?
I definitely think so because we go against scout team players so I'm pretty sure other teams do. I don't think their scout team guys come off the edge as quick as I do so it may be something new for them early.

Coach O'Brien talked about how since moving Darryl Cato-Bishop to the same position as you the production has increased because you two can rotate in together. I think he said you guys had 4.5 sacks against Clemson. Can you talk about rotating with him?
I actually played next to Cato before when we both were starting, but with Brian being moved they moved him in front of me which is great.

Now I don't have to play 70 snaps a game like I was playing at the start of the season. I can play less, stay fresh, and be more explosive.

The defense has put together a string of impressive performances. You redshirted last year but was able to watch that defense play. Do you feel like right now the defense is playing as well as it has since you've been at NC State?
I definitely think so. It took us a minute to get it together, but we're on the same page. We had a lot of people go down in the beginning of the season, but we have about everyone back and we're clicking.

That's the main thing, we're clicking and making plays.

What is the No. 1 goal for Maryland?
Just to win. That's it. We're trying to go to this bowl game.
