One of the top defensive line prospects from the Peach State is probably an unknown to all but the most diehard recruiting fans of NC State, but that could be about to change.
That's because Justin Thomason, a 6-3, 240-pound pass rushing end, hasn't been talking much about NC State until now. The Wolfpack seems to be surging with the athletic defensive end, who also has the potential to play outside linebacker in college.
"Some (schools) say I can play outside linebacker because of my weight but others are saying defensive end because of my speed. I don't really care too much because I like both. I've been playing defensive end longer though," Thomason explained.
On the recruiting front, he claims that he doesn't have any favorites but he did single out Vanderbilt as a school that he's familiar with and interested in. The Commodores aren't too terribly far from home and that's something that could help their odds.
"Academics are most important for me and then location because my mom doesn't want me to go too far from home," he said. "Then the third thing would be whether I can start off playing right away or whether I would have to redshirt.
"My mom would probably like me to keep it within six hours or something like that."
Thomason has offers from schools all over the nation and some of those have been easier to eliminate than others because of the distance factor. One school that Thomason hasn't eliminated yet is NC State. In fact, the Pack seems to be surging.
"NC State was actually the last offer I got," he recalled. "I got the offer from NC State a couple of months ago.
"I really don't know too much about them yet but one of their recruiting coaches came down here. I haven't been up there before, but I would like to get up there sometime. That's one school I've really been thinking about lately."
North Carolina is also on Thomason's radar. It's unclear whether he would take separate visits to UNC and NC State or whether he would visit both schools while he's in the area at some point.
Thomason said he would like to have a decision made within the next four to six weeks but he has not formally set a decision date.
