Class of 2004: Jerod Mayo

Hampton (VA) Kecoughtan's Jerod Mayo is one of the south's finest linebackers who's being pursued by some of the top schools in the nation. <p> N.C. State is currently in his top-6, and the Wolfpack have left an impression on Mayo.

"I like N.C. State," Jerod told us. "Coach Diaz is recruiting me for NC State, and I hear they have some new facilities that are supposed to be the best in the nation. I want to go down and check it out sometime soon. Also, I think i can fit into their defense at Outside Linebacker because their style of play fits my game."

Mayo enters his senior season as the #2 overall prospect in Virginia, off a junior campaign that garnered all-region honors.

"I'm expecting a big year for us. Right now I'm at 6-foot-2, 215 and ran a 4.6 flat at a recent combine near here. Last year I had 68 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 4 sacks."

Several schools have been expressing heavy interest in Jerod, but only the two in-state programs have put forth offers so far.

"I like UVA, [Virginia] Tech, NC State, Maryland, Purdue, and Tennessee the best. Virginia and Tech have offered me, but the other schools have basically said they are going to also. They want me to camp with them before putting the official offers out, so I'm probably going to attend one-day camps at as many of them as I can."

Distance won't be a factor for Mayo, and although he denies a leader, one program has been turning up the heat on him.

"Virginia is recruiting me the hardest. I like how they play their young guys and it means I'd have a chance to play early. And, their coaching staff is good, especially Coach Groh who used to be in the NFL."

Don't expect an early decision from this Hampton, Virginia product because he really enjoys the recruiting process.

"I love it. I'm not going to decide until the last minute because I want to take as many visits as I can and make sure I choose the best school for me. I'll definitely be a signing day decision."
