Gottfried: "It's A Big Week For Us"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media to discuss the upcoming game against Virginia Tech.

"It's a big week for us... I think it's going to be a great challenge."

"It's going to be a very difficult place to play against a team that is a whole lot better than their record shows."

"I think our guys understand that we've missed on some opportunities and that bothers them more than anything, but you can't roll the clock back."

"We are who we are and we find ourselves with our backs against the wall, but for our guys I think it's a learning situation for them. We haven't been in this situation before."

"I've been in this situation as a coach a number of years and I know what the committee deems important."

"This becomes a topic if we win Sunday, but if you look at the nonconference strength of schedule, Virginia sits at 223, Clemson is 182, I think Miami is 110, and NC State is 23. The difference in what we chose to do in November and December can help you. Now, we've got to take care of our business Sunday or it's a moot point."

"Calvin has played at a high level, his last six games have been terrific. You need your best weapons to play at a high level, which he has done."

"For us, we've put ourselves in a position where we need to win Sunday and go to Atlanta with the mindset to win the tournament."

"When you don't win, you really take it so hard... your players do."

"[Against] Florida State, I thought we stunk."

"I think Lorenzo has been playing good... I thought earlier in the year he really had great confidence... I think he's done a pretty good job of being the quarterback of our team. I have such a high level of expectation for him that it's hard for me, I'm probably too hard on Lorenzo because I want him to be perfect at that position."

"It's not something we need to talk about right now, but I want to do everything I can to help him make the right decision."

"I think your team needs to win... whoever you think is the best player, that carries a lot of weight too, so we'll see."

"I think that in the league play I would be disappointed if Calvin is not a first team or high second team guy. I'd really be disappointed if that happened."

"His last five games he's averaging 19 and 9. He has played deserving to be an All-ACC player this year."

"I think our team has to improve in the area of decision making at key times."

"When you look at our team, to me, I think that is something where we can still improve a lot."

"Richard is struggling lately [at the free throw line], I think his last five games he is 38%. He's got to get better at that."

"I thought this team could be a really good foul shooting team, but collectively that has hurt us at times."

"You keep singing the same song. I tell him all the time he has to play without fouling."

"At the end of the game I thought Richard made huge plays for us."

"Carolina is the most talented team. It's hard to debate that. I think Carolina will walk in there with an edge, but Duke is awfully good too. It's going to be a great game."
