Tennessee is not a state that NC State normally recruits. However, the Pack appears extremely interested in Memphis (TN) University School linebacker Ford Howell after evaluating his film earlier this year.
At 6-2, 220 pounds Howell possesses good size and he utilized that to help tally 68 tackles, five tackles for loss and one fumble recovery as a junior. Thus far he's landed offers from NC State, Lehigh and Western Kentucky. Howell's also hearing from a number of additional schools and he recently gave Pack Pride the latest on where he stands recruiting-wise.
"I still have the same three offers but I think I'm going to pick up some more pretty soon.
"I'm also hearing from Mississippi State, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Boston College and Duke. I'm going to Vanderbilt (this past weekend) and then visit the others down the road."
In addition to those visits, Howell expects to be busy on the camp circuit this summer as he's planning to hit several schools prior to the start of fall practice.
"I'm planning to camp at Mississippi State and Vanderbilt for sure. Then Boston College, Duke and Northwestern depending on whether they offer early or what they want in terms of seeing me run in person."
Howell has already visited NC State, making the trip to Raleigh for junior day back in February. He gave a glowing report of what the Wolfpack had to offer.
"I was impressed with how nice everything was. The weight room, the stadium, the locker room, all the facilities were nice. I was really impressed by coach Tenuta. Everybody I've talked to knows who he is and that he's just a great linebacker coach.
Coach Petercuskie is the main one recruiting me because I don't think State normally recruits Tennessee. I think they found out about me through my film I sent in. They evaluated it and ended up offering."
While still early in the process, who has risen to the top of Howell's favorite's list?
"My top five would be NC State, Mississippi State, Duke, Vanderbilt and Boston College."
Given a preference, Howell says he'd like to get recruiting out of the way prior to his senior season.
"If I have options that I like I'd like to make a decision before or during my season. If I'm still waiting on something then I might go on longer but I'd probably prefer sooner versus later."
