"Oregon was great," said Young. "I had a good time, and it seemed like a really good fit. I'm originally from Eugene, so I was familiar with the area, and it was cool to go back and check out Oregon, possibly play in my hometown."
NC State head coach Mark Gottfried and assistant Rob Moxley made their way out to California last week to catch Young in action, and the Wolfpack left impressed.
"Coach Gottfried was out here and so was coach Moxley," said Young. "I think I showed them what I could do. My coach told me that coach Gottfried said he came out expecting to like the way I play, but he loved the way I play. He thinks I fit what they are looking for so that's a plus for sure."
Next up for Young is NC State. He left California late Thursday evening and should be on the Wolfpack's campus right now. What does he think of State?
"In my opinion, they have the best low-post offense in the country," said Young. "I haven't seen a team better in terms of emphasis in games and how well-coached they are. Their angles are always correct, they post with a purpose, have great hand placement... it's incredibly attractive to me as a post player.
"After meeting with coach Gottfried and coach Moxley, I firmly believe I will go to NC State and have a great visit. I know they lost DeShawn Painter, and I feel bad about that because of the situation, but as far as impacting me I know it would open up more minutes if I went there."
Young, who said he was measured at 6-foot-8 (without shoes) and 230 pounds with a 6-foot-11 wingspan on his Oregon visit, recently completed the 2011-2012 season by leading the state of California in scoring (22 points per game) and rebounding (14.2).
His play led to dozens of offers from programs such as NC State, Texas A&M, Oregon, Vanderbilt, and Cal among others. However, he has started to narrow his focus down to a trio of schools with another potentially involved.
"I've already been to Texas A&M and Oregon and now I have NC State," said Young. "Vanderbilt is pushing for a visit, but I don't know if I will take that one. It kind of depends on how things work out.
"As of right now I'm all even with the schools. I'll be looking for the best fit. I wouldn't say the place where I am the most comfortable because if I'm too comfortable I could become laidback and content, and I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. I think you want to find a great fit but also a program that will push you to be the best.
"As far as a timeframe, it kind of depends on how things work out. It's been a little stressful, constantly thinking about schools and it would be nice to have it all locked in. I think I could know within the next week."
