O'Brien: 'The Defense Jumps Back Ahead'

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media today following the Kay Yow Spring Game.

"I thought we were competitive here until the 3rd quarter. I thought it was the best part of the game."

"The defense, those kids in the secondary, they've grown up a lot, I think they showed that today."

"You've got to be happy with the way Baumann kicked the ball. He kicked the ball unbelievably today."

"We do a good job getting after the quarterback."

"The defense jumps back ahead. That's what happens during the course of practice."

"We've got a lot of work to do [at linebacker]. I don't think anything is settled, not only at linebacker but a couple of spots right now. I think those kids, it's better the way we ended up this spring in this. Hopefully we can practice that way."

"I think [Rodman] Noel can be. I'm not sure right now... we don't have a Cole or a Manning right now. Peek, Pittman, those guys are too young... maybe next spring I can say they are but I can't say that today."

"I think that's a fact of spring practice... it's a lot better in the fall when you've got 29 straight practices to get ready."

"The fact that we came out of it healthy. We get everybody healthy and get everybody going in the strength and training area."
