A former four-year member of the NC State men's basketball team, Watkins spent seven seasons on the Wolfpack staff. He was named the assistant director of basketball operations prior to the 2011-12 season.

Watkins held several positions on the Wolfpack staff since exhausting his eligibility in 2005. He served as the director of basketball operations for the last two seasons, after serving as the video coordinator for three seasons.

Watkins played for NC State from 2002-05. He appeared in 97 career games, and hit 82 career three-pointers. Watkins helped the Pack to four consecutive NCAA tournaments; making NC State one of 21 teams in the country to do so at the time. NC State progressed to at least the second round in three of his four years, including the Sweet Sixteen in his senior year.

Canisius recently hired Jim Baron as head coach. Baron, the 23rd head coach in Canisius College men's basketball history, previously spent 11 seasons as head coach at Rhode Island where he won 184 games and made six postseason appearances.
