Yow: "They Are Very Proud"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- At the Wolfpack Club Caravan, NC State director of athletics Debbie Yow discusses the renewed optimism in all programs but especially men's basketball.

"It is a little different than it was a year ago. There is a sense of renewed pride and a sense of renewed hope in the whole athletic program, but I would say in particular men's basketball right now."

"I want to try and find ways to improve NC State so that our fans can feel proud of the programs, whether it's football, men's basketball, or any other sport."

"Graduation and winning, those two things, what a combination that is."

"I think there is no question, as a former basketball coach, I tend to be pretty realistic and fact-based, and I think there is a little bit of hype involved."

"I would say top ten is pretty high, but we will see where we go with that."

"I think a lot of people know coach Gottfried and I have known each other since he was a freshman in college."

"I did want to do that face-to-face to see if he still had the passion he used to have."

"I don't think anyone could have accurately predicted how well he fits into the NC State culture. That is pretty special."

"No one can plan in year one with a team that hasn't been to the NCAAs in six years to go to the Sweet 16. That just isn't possible."

"A lot of congratulations from across the country to all of us and our team. It was a very special moment. It will always be a special moment."

"This is about consistency now and the continued development of the 23 varsity teams. As an AD I can't just be focused on football and basketball but they do have to lead the way."

"Coach O'Brien has a veteran team returning and a quarterback who is pretty talented so we're looking for a good year... hoping to stay away from the injury bug."

"This is not an event, it is really a process. We're two years in right now and we're gaining a little bit of momentum, but we have a long way to go."

"Look, what Carolina and Duke have done in their athletic programs is unbelievable. They are the gold standard, but we are going to make our mark."

"I absolutely can tell there is a special buzz right now with our fans. They are very proud. It's nice to have bragging rights again in some cases, but I try not to totally get caught up in it because there is a lot of work to do."

"Apparel deal will be this week. I'm not sure if it's tomorrow or the next day or Friday, but it will be this week. We are determined. We need to finish that and go on to other things."
