Fernandez Talks NC State

Lake Mary (FL) linebacker Jerod Fernandez talks about his recent visit to NC State.

Jerod Fernandez picked up an offer from NC State a while back and a little over a week ago he made his first visit to the school.

The Lake Mary (FL) linebacker was a virtual unknown until recently. Now he's landed offers from NC State, Western Kentucky and Temple with several other schools apparently deciding whether they want to pull the trigger.

He wanted to show NC State that he's interested because of their offer so he made the long trip from Lake Mary to Raleigh. Before attending the spring game, Fernandez arrived a day earlier and had a chance to watch the Wolfpack practice after a quick visit to Duke.

"I had a really good time at NC State," the 6-1, 215-pound linebacker said. "It was great to see the boys go at it. The guys were really playing hard out there. That was impressive to see."

Fernandez wasn't in town just to watch passively as another spectator. He's a student of the game and used his time at State to pick up some pointers while watching the Wolfpack players in action.

"They run a 4-3 defense so they put some linebackers out there. I liked seeing their defense and I really like the way they do their drills. I've done those before," he said. "I would fit in well with that."

Defensive Back's coach Mike Reed  has been recruiting Fernandez and the linebacker said it was great to connect with him.

"I've always had a good relationship with Coach Reed," he said. "He's a really good guy. He keeps it real with you. He knows what he's doing. The coaches are impressive."

NC State offered Fernandez around February or March, he estimates, and he said the coaches have done a good job of making it clear that they're interested.

"It's an impressive place," he said in summary. "It was my first time visiting and it's a school I'll definitely be looking at. They're recruiting me really hard."

Fernandez finished his junior season with 99 total tackles, one caused fumble, and two pass breakups.

In addition to his offers, Fernandez is also receiving interest from Miami, Vanderbilt, Central Florida and TCU.
