With seven offers already on the table you would figure Bunn (NC) athlete Johnathan Alston would be a household recruiting name. However, he's flown under the recruiting radar for the most part despite the interest from numerous division one powers.
However, at 6-1, 197 pounds and blessed with the versatility to star on offense or defense, it's a safe bet you'll be hearing quite a bit more about Alton headed forward.
At a recent Shrine Bowl combine, Alston was timed at 4.57-seconds in the 40-yard dash while recording a 4.7-second pro shuttle and 32-inch vertical jump. While somewhat raw and unpolished at wide receiver, that's the spot he worked out at in front of the Shrine coaches and the position he hopes to occupy in college.
On the recruiting side, Pack Pride caught up with the rising senior and he gave us the latest on the schools showing him the most interest.
"Recruiting's been going good." he said. "I've got seven offers. UNC, State, East Carolina, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Tennessee and South Carolina have offered.
"Carolina, State, Notre Dame and Arkansas are recruiting me hard. They all send me a lot of letters."
While he didn't specifically name any favorites, those four appear to be the schools that have set themselves apart so far. The Wolfpack, in particular, have made a favorable impression.
"Coach Kitchings is recruiting me for State. He's cool and I like State, too. They're a good program. They like me as a wide receiver and as an outside linebacker. I probably like playing wide receiver more."
As for UNC, they will also be a team to reckon with.
"When I was little I grew up watching basketball. I didn't watch a lot of football. So I'm still a Carolina guy a little bit."
Alston said he plans to wait a while before making a decision and has yet to set a firm timetable. He is currently rated a three star prospect and the No. 29 OLB in the nation by Scout.com.
