O'Brien: Pack Focused On Being The Best

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media today following the Wolfpack's first practice of fall camp.

"I think it went well. The starting point now is much higher for a lot of these kids."

"For some of them, they've been doing the same thing now for a couple of years so it helps when you get off to a start like we did today."

"I didn't say it's my best team. I said it is the deepest and most experienced. We'll find out if it's going to be the best."

"[Mustafa Greene, Tyler Brosius,] and [A.J.] Ferguson are still working to get themselves on to the football field. We'll see if they make it or not. It's academically related."

"I said if he continues to do what he is supposed to do he would be able to get out here and practice. He's got to continue to do what he's supposed to do, and if he doesn't, then he won't be here."

"[Robert] Caldwell wasn't here because he is still having his paperwork filed and hopefully that will all be done by tomorrow... admissions paperwork. It's just a question of it getting here to the proper authorities on campus so they can clear him for practice."

"This is the first time we've been here that we have been able to work three teams and the third teams were all freshmen. I want to go around and look at them."

"[Tim Buckley] has a chance to get himself into the two-deep. With us losing Coleman and Dean Haynes, that opened up a spot. Fortunately for us he wanted to come home and play for us."

"I called coach O'Brien and told him which kids had called us and if they continued to talk to us and they wanted to make a move, he didn't have a problem with that. Tim was a guy who wanted to do that."

"I told them and the coaches re-iterated to a lot of them, with the added experience and depth a lot of guys aren't guaranteed. Maybe they started in the past but they may not be able to start on this football team... we're going to make them compete all the way through and as always the best will end up playing when we want to put a depth chart together."

"I think [Tony Creecy] made great strides at the end of the year."

"There is no depth chart. Nobody has a job won. [C.J. Wilson] is going to have to fight for a position. That's the way we ended spring practice."

"Even last year when [Sterling Lucas] couldn't play, the support he gave everybody... I think he has really good leadership qualities."

"I think they did good. First days are always good. We want to know where we are when we get to practice nine and 10... we'll see how they are pushing it then."

"It's a more confident football team because they've won two years in a row."

"We've created some depth so we'll create competition."

"We're not focused on Tennessee at all right now. We're focused on trying to be the best we can at State. It's all about fundamentals and being a good football team."
