Clearly the running back position has been a huge priority for the NC State coaching staff for the class of 2013. They took another huge step forward in addressing those needs after landing a commitment from Guyton (GA) South Effingham standout Josh Mercer.
At 5-11, 190 pounds, Mercer attracted interest from Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Wake Forest among others but decided on Monday evening that his future will be in Raleigh. Pack Pride talked with him about his decision.
"Yes sir, I committed about 30 minutes ago," said Mercer. "Going through the process, it's a long process and I just felt like they wanted me. I feel like I can be a good asset to their team.
"They said they had two running backs that split carries but they need a star running back and they just felt like I'd be a good asset to the team. I just felt like with NC State and coach Kitchings, I'd just be a part of the family with them."
Mercer is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 98 running back in the nation by Scout.com.
At a combine held last April, Mercer ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash and an equally impressive 4.09-second shuttle.
Pack Pride will have much more on NC State's latest commitment so stay tuned!
