Gottfried: Pack Ready For Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media to discuss the opener against Miami (OH).

Mark Gottfried

"[Miami (OH) is] a team that has some experience. They are not going to rely on a lot of freshmen or sophomores to be honest. Most of their players have played college basketball."

"They've got a new staff with a ton of energy and some veteran players... we're anticipating that they are going to come in here and be a very, very good basketball team."

"Richard I think is becoming much better... a 15, 12-foot jump shooter. Calvin has improved certain parts of his game, Lorenzo as well."

"I think [all the returning players] have sharpened up or improved different aspects of their games."

"I'm happy for him, I think that's great for Dez [Wells], but you don't know sometimes when you're on the outside what information the committee actually had that would make them go that route. That was interesting."

"At one time the waiver process on transfers was iron clad."

"I think we've got to a point now where it's real tricky to figure out who should or who shouldn't sit out anymore."

"When I played, we didn't play games until late November. We literally had six weeks of practice prior to games."

"I'm still debating [who will be the fifth starter], and I'm not sure that it's really that important to me so we'll see tomorrow."

"I think [Rodney Purvis] has at times played very well."

"I think [Rodney Purvis] is where he needs to be as we prepare to play our first game."

"I think as he begins to see and learn all the different things that will be thrown to him."

"You get your team ready to play early in the season as you can."

"I'm going to learn a lot about my team as we go through these first eight or nine games."
