Khairi Bailey became pretty familiar with NC State's head coach when he was still at Northern Illinois.
The Chicago (IL) Julian defensive lineman visited Northern Illinois four times while Dave Doeren was the head coach there. Along the way, Bailey got to know Doeren and the other members of the NIU staff well.
"I liked them," Bailey said of Doeren's staff at NIU. "They treat you like family. They want to meet your family and they talk to you about everything. They get real close to you."
When Doeren moved on to NC State he brought over several former recruiting targets from his time at Northern Illinois. Bailey is one of the guys that has emerged as a major prospect for NC State as a new recruiting board has materialized for the Wolfpack over the last several weeks.
Bailey was happy to see that Doeren still wanted him and the fact that NC State is a bigger stage only made the opportunity better. That has helped pave the way for an upcoming official visit.
"I'll be down there on January 11," he said.
He won't rule out a commitment that weekend either though he did say it's too early to speculate on whether that will happen since he has never seen the school before. Bailey is planning to visit Colorado State on January 18 if a commitment doesn't happen that weekend at NC State.
The Wolfpack is recruiting Bailey as a defensive tackle. He had 10 sacks, 65 tackles and three forced fumbles to his credit as a junior.
