"I wasn't considering NC State until the new coaching staff got there," said Gibbs. "They were recruiting me at Northern Illinois, but coach Faulkner, he was recruiting me hard when he was at Wisconsin and he is at NC State now.
"When he went down there they offered me a scholarship, and we have built a good relationship together. Coach Faulkner, he's real cool. He's a honest guy. He doesn't tell you what you want to hear or talk bad about other places... just tells it like it is and I like that."
Gibbs took his official visit to Illinois back in December, and this weekend he will be in Raleigh for his official visit to NC State. What will he be looking for on the trip?
"I want to see what the city is like," he said. "I want to talk football with the coaches and players. I'm going to see how the campus is an what the stadium is like."
Gibbs, who holds offers from NC State, Illinois, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Indiana, Wisconsin, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, and Northern Illinois among others, has narrowed his focus to four schools.
"It's mainly NC State, Illinois, Pittsburgh, and Michigan State," he said. "Michigan State is the only one that hasn't offered me yet.
"I go to NC State this weekend and then Pittsburgh the next. I'll probably visit Michigan State if they offer me."
Gibbs, who checks in at 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, played defensive end and defensive tackle this season for Cass Tech as he helped lead them to a state title. He is being recruited by NC State, Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Michigan State to play defensive tackle.
"I'll play anywhere on the line as long as I get to ball," he said. "Defensive end or tackle... it doesn't matter to me."
As it stands now, Gibbs says there is no leader. However, he didn't rule out potentially committing while on an official visit.
"I don't have a favorite," Gibbs stated. "I'm going to go where I feel like it's set up to win. I'm going to go to the place that I think can get me to the league.
"If I go on one of the visits and feel like it's the right school for me and I know no other school can compete with that, I'm going to commit to that school. Other than that, I doubt [I'll commit while on an official visit]."
