Gottfried: "I'm Proud Of Our Effort"

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media after the loss to Virginia.

"I'm proud of our effort. I thought our team played really hard. I thought we had to overcome some tough things that happened in the game. Obviously, losing Lorenzo is a tough hurdle for our team to get over, but I thought they battled through that very well."

"We didn't execute as well as we should late in the game and we also had some opportunities where we got the ball right around the rim and just couldn't seem to score it, so that was tough."

"They did a nice job, and good win for Virginia, but it's something I think we just need to continue to stay together and we can build on this."

Were your players under any instruction to foul?
"No. Not at all. That's not a good play. We just can't make that play and it's something we need to learn from. We're down one and at the 29 second mark and we've got to get the defensive stop right there."

Is there an update on Zo?
"I think it'll be a couple days before we have any idea if he'll play against Miami. He tried to play tonight, wanted to play. I think it's too early to tell that right now."

Does Rodney get more playing time because of this?
"Rodney and Tyler both. I thought they both did a pretty good job throughout the game. Tyler did a nice job, as well. So we'll see. We've got to step forward. If you've got an injury, we've got to figure out a way to make it work."

Was the way Tobey performed at all a surprise?
"Nope. I think he's played well for them. Here lately, he's scored a lot around the basket, defensively he's been pretty good. Harris had a nice game, although I thought our guys really made him earn it. He had to take some tough shots. He's a bery good player."

Is there a different flow to your offense when Lorenzo is not in?
"Sure. I think he's the best point guard in the ACC, so obviously we're a little different. We've got to overcome that. And if he doesn't play Saturday, we'll have to do it for 40 minutes. It's a part of the game."

Aside from his talent, how much did it affect the fatigue as the game went on?
"I don't think it affects the fatigue necessarily, but I think it just affects kind of everything. If you take Joe Flacco out of the game Sunday, it's going to be a different game. That's what happens. Injuries are a part of the game. I think he only played 8 or 10 minutes, so we've just got to find a way. I think it affects everything, it affects defensive matchups, it affects how well we run our offense and where the ball goes. Lorenzo also gives us some scoring from that position.

"C.J. was under the weather all day. I thought he fought through it and played well. I give him a lot of credit because he's been pretty sick."

What did you expect from C.J. tonight?
"I wasn't sure. He didn't practice yesterday, he didn't come to shootaround. I wasn't sure how much energy he would have and I thought that he did a good job fighting through it. He gave us everything he could."

Do you have any concerns with playing on the road? This is three straight road losses. Do you think it has anything to do with playing on the road?
"Not necessarily. I think that when we've been on the road, it seems like it turns into a rugby match. We've got to be better at handling that. It's just something we've got to make sure we improve on."

How much does this emphasize the impact that Zo has on the court?
"A lot. It affects us a lot. He's one of the best point guards in the country."
