NC State's search for a quarterback is taking the coaches to states that aren't typically areas the Wolfpack taps into.
Dave Doeren's staff has now offered two quarterbacks in California. Pack Pride recently profiled the program's recruitment of Brandon Dawkins and now NC State has offered Marin Catholic (CA) quarterback Morgan Mahalak.
Mahalak is familiar with NC State, having visited the school earlier this year. He was in the Triangle area checking out NC State, North Carolina and Duke.
Unfortunately he had the least amount of time at NC State. Mahalak was in Raleigh for just about ninety minutes, while he was at Duke for two hours and North Carolina for six.
"I did notice the facilities were nice even though it was a really quick visit. It was a brief visit. The facilities were nice and it looked like they have all the tools to be successful," he said.
"I know (Doeren) came from Northern Illinois and I like the offense they run. It's kind of similar to what we do. Obviously he was doing some things with that program to get them to the Orange Bowl. I watch all the videos he sends me so I've got some interest in them."
Mahalak said NC State has not been recruiting him long and the offer took him by surprise. He has been in regular contact with Doeren on Facebook but that has just been recently.
While NC State is an option Mahalak is giving some thought to he admitted that he's waiting to see what Oregon does and whether they decide to offer. Mahalak visited Oregon for two days recently and saw everything the program has to offer.
"I'm waiting on Oregon a little bit, it's just that they're very patient and thorough," he said. "I really like their coaching staff. It's a great staff and they've got a bunch of good players that are quality character guys. I like the offense a lot and it's similar to what we do. I have family there and every single aspect of the school is appealing to me.
"They're coming to see me the second week of May and I don't want to say too much but it looks good. They would be at the top of my list if they do offer."
Mahalak is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 45 quarterback in the nation by Scout.com.
