Elon (NC) Western Carolina defensive back Brock Deatherage seemingly put an early end to his college recruitment when he selected UNC over NC State for a spot on the Heel's baseball team as an outfielder.
The rising senior picked the Heels in part because of Carolina's decision to allow Deatherage to continue to pursue football opportunities. Conversely, NC State told Deatherage that they did not want him to look at football if he committed to the Pack for baseball.
Deatherage is just now getting his name out and letting coaches know that he's serious about playing college football. He certainly helped his cause recently after ripping off 40-yard dash times of 4.35 and 4.41-seconds at last weekend's Shrine Bowl combine. Deatherage was measured at 5-11, 167 pounds.
Pack Pride caught up with Deatherage and he gave us the latest on where his recruiting stands for football.
"I'm just waiting to see what all my options are," he said. "The baseball thing started off before football and I jumped at the opportunity not knowing what would happen with football.
"Right now a couple of schools are in the mix. I've taken several trips to Wake Forest actually. They're really interested. It's about the same with Duke. Duke and Wake have been on me the longest. Charlotte offered me as a defensive back. I've taken a couple visits to Carolina for football and I've gotten some stuff in the mail from Tennessee and Auburn. But I'm just keeping my options open with the in-state schools with State, Wake Forest, Duke and Carolina."
NC State hosted Deatherage on an unofficial visit a week ago and it was obvious the Wolfpack staff made a good impression.
"I took a visit to NC State and that was the first time I met the new staff and I was very impressed. I made a real good connection with the players and there's just never a dull moment down there. I just really like the enthusiasm of the new staff. I attended a couple of games last year and went to junior day with the old staff but this was my first chance to meet the new coaching staff."
So what will Deatherage's plan be if a football offer is extended?
"It would be a really hard decision. The football thing would be a full scholarship while baseball is just a partial offer so money would come into it. I just want to look at all my football options and my baseball options and do what's best for me."
