DeMatha defensive lineman Deonte Holden (6-4, 205 pounds) visited NC State over his spring break and shortly after that trip he learned the school had offered him.
The offer may have come as a little bit of a surprise since coaches often like to offer while recruits are on campus to heighten the experience and give them something to remember the trip by.
Two weekends ago Holden's trip to NC State went very well.
"I got to see the practice, see how the coaches got to coach their players and they toured me around the school. I got to see a lot. The weight room and all that stuff. The practice was great because they all came together as a family. That's something we're trying to get with our team," he said.
But he left without an offer.
That changed just a couple of days after he returned to Hyattsville (MD). Apparently the coaching staff, headed by Dave Doeren, had talked things over and decided to move.
"They had wanted to see my transcript and know that I can survive in the school as a student and not just as a football player," he said. "Coach McNutt has been my recruiter and I get along with him real well. I like how they've done everything."
The only other school Holden has visited is Temple but he hopes to check out some of the other schools that have offered soon. Those visits will help him put together a short list that he will choose from but for now he's remaining open.
Cincinnati, Iowa, and East Carolina are among many other schools that have offered.
