Culler: "I Had A Great Time"

Wilmington (NC) Laney standout Coult Culler was in Raleigh this weekend for the Wolfpack's spring game.

"I had a great time," said Culler. "We went up there and had a chance to talk with the coaches a lot. I was able to see their defense and how it works.

"I went up with my dad... he loved it. He said the new coaching staff at NC State is great."

Culler, a three-year starter at middle linebacker for Laney High School, had 130+ tackles as a junior, earning all-conference and Mid-Eastern Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder holds offers from NC State, North Carolina, and East Carolina. He says the Wolfpack and Pirates are recruiting him to play linebacker while UNC is looking at his as an athlete.

Culler said he had a chance to spend some time with NC State linebackers coach Dave Huxtable before leaving Raleigh.

"We were able to talk for a while," said Culler. "I love the way he coaches. He really likes aggressive football players that hit hard. That's how I try to play. He puts them in a position to make plays."

Culler admits he is very close to making a decision.

"It's definitely going to be between State and Carolina because they are both in-state schools, and I want to stay close to home."

Coming off back-to-back visits where both schools knew Culler was close to deciding, he talked about how they pursued him while he was on campus.

"I can tell both schools want me," said Culler. "When I went to Carolina they were giving me sort of a timeframe to decide because they said they have some other guys also about to decide. At State, coach Doeren and coach Kitchings were talking about how much they really want me to go to that school. They want me to make my decision when I'm comfortable.

"I understand that's how it works and you want to make a decision to hold your spot at a school because they can go on to the next guy. Schools have to fill up their class."

When could Culler make a decision?

"Here in the next month or so I think I'm going to commit," he said. "I'm still completely undecided. I'm not favoring Carolina or State... I just want to sit down and talk about it some more with my family.

"I'm going to be looking at the school, the education, and where I have a chance to play as a freshman... all of that."

North Carolina is expected to visit Culler this week. NC State has already been through during the evaluation period.

"Coach Kitchings came to my school on the first day of the evaluation period," said Culler. "Coach Disch from Carolina is coming this week."
