State Establishes Wolfpack Leadership Academy

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State Athletics, in association with the Janssen Sport Leadership Center, announced Friday the formation of the Wolfpack Leadership Academy, which will help the Wolfpack develop the next generation of leaders, both in competition and life.

The Wolfpack Leadership Academy will launch this summer with a focus on the NC State football program. The academy will then open to all Wolfpack athletic programs beginning with the 2013 fall semester and continue into the spring.

"Jeff Janssen's leadership program is the gold standard in athletic circles and we are pleased he will be the professional teaching in the Academy," said Deborah A. Yow, NC State Director of Athletics.

As the worldwide leader in sports leadership development, the Janssen Sports Leadership Center offers comprehensive and customized training for college and high school athletic departments around the globe.

Working with some of the nation's top colleges, including North Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Arkansas, Baylor, Pitt and over 200 other schools across the U.S., the group has helped develop student-athletes and coaches into world-class leaders on and off the playing fields, through engaging and interactive leadership summits, retreats, and academies.

According to the company, 85 percent of participants at the schools said the program had a positive effect on their team's performance, and at Michigan, 100 percent of student-athletes improved their leadership scores.

The program will be launched with two specific groups in mind: the Emerging Leaders program for sophomores and juniors, and Veteran Leaders for established leaders who are juniors and seniors.

Recently the men's soccer team met with Janssen, and according to head coach Kelly Findley, his players learned about the role leadership could and should play in athletics.

"Jeff Janssen had great practical advice and insight for our players and team," added Findley. "He also provided some tangible take-aways that our players could use to improve their performance on and off the field."

NC State head volleyball coach Bryan Bunn worked with Janssen at Baylor a few years back and has already invited him to meet with his Wolfpack squad.

"Jeff has been instrumental in helping a number of programs achieve success on a national level," Bunn said. "He helped our team at Baylor and his sessions with our team captains here at State have us headed in the right direction for next year."

The academy will provide comprehensive and innovative leadership development through education, interactive workshops, 360-degree feedback, one-on-one coaching, peer mentoring and online training. The new program is designed to expand the NC State student-athlete experience to include lessons learned on and off the playing fields that can be transferred to lessons that participants take with them when they graduate.
