Now that's changing. Carney (6-2, 210 pounds) was the linebacker MVP at the NFTC in Washington D.C., standing out in coverage drills and impressing with his vocal leadership and intangibles.
Carney wasn't surprised by his performance though some onlookers were.
"I've been performing like this at a bunch of camps. I've expected more interest," he said.
Now he's getting in. Last week Old Dominion, Western Michigan and UConn offered the Alexandria (VA) linebacker. NC State is showing a lot of interest and more than ever after that NFTC performance.
Carney and Williams both attended the NCSU spring game a few weeks ago.
"Everybody was very friendly. There were a lot of fans, a lot of people there. They made everybody feel welcome. I talked to Coach McNutt and I met the head coach and the linebacker coach," he said.
"I had talked to Coach McNutt before I went down there. He wanted me to meet the rest of the coaching staff and gave me a quick tour of the place. Coach Doeren said he was glad I was there. He said they were recruiting me."
Carney did not receive an offer from the Wolfpack but the coaches have told him they want him to camp this summer. If he performs well there an offer could be on the way.
He is likely to attend one of the program's single day camps in June. That will not be the only summer camp he attends either.
"I'm going to go to Penn State's camp because they're really high on me. They're looking at me. I'll probably go to Rutgers for one day because they're showing a lot of interest. I'm going to visit their school in a couple of weeks too."
While NCSU has not offered Carney but they have offered his teammate Clarke.
