"Yes sir. I committed to State. It was just a great visit on Saturday. I like the coaching staff. I like the way they treated me and it's just the best fit for me. I think with the offense they want to run, it really suits my style. "I actually called coach Doeren on the phone and let him know and he was really excited. He told me that all the coaches would be hugging me and carrying me around the room if I had been up there."
So will McClendon continue to entertain interest from other schools? Right now, that seems very unlikely.
"I'm done with recruiting. I'm going to State."
McClendon has had a strong evaluation period, picking up offers in the last two weeks from NC State, Miami, and Virginia to go along with previous offers from Florida State, North Carolina, Wake Forest, East Carolina, and UNC-Charlotte.
McClendon had a stellar junior year where he led West Mecklenburg to a 9-4 record, the school's best mark in nearly 25 years. He finished the season with over 2,000 yards of total offense, 22 total touchdowns, and just eight interceptions.
At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, McClendon has good size and athleticism. He is still developing as a passer, but the tools are what excites college coaches.
"I try to model my game after Cam Newton," he stated. "I'd have to say my biggest strength is just my ability to make plays. I try to keep plays live when I need to.
"What I can improve on is my footwork. I can work on that, my footwork and also where I hold the ball."
McClendon is NC State's fifth commitment and the Wolfpack's fourth in-state verbal in the 2014 recruiting class.
Pack Pride will have more from McClendon on his decision in the near future so stay tuned!
