Rodon, Pack Tops FSU, 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. -- No. 5 N.C. State (39-11, 16-8) defeated No. 9 Florida State (40-10, 16-9), 3-1, at Doak Field at Dial Park.

The winning pitcher for the Pack was Carlos Rodon, who improved to 7-2 on the year. Chris Overman pitched the ninth for his sixth save of the campaign.

N.C. State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Logan Ratledge opened the frame with a single. The sophomore from Charlotte stole second and then advanced to third on a Weaver wild pitch. Ratledge then scored when Weaver uncorked another wild pitch on a third strike to rightfielder Jake Fincher.

The Pack increased its cushion in bottom of the fourth inning to 3-0 when leftfielder Bryan Adametz plated two runs with a two-out single up the middle.

Adametz also contributed mightily in the field. In the top of the first inning, the senior form Wellington, Fla. made a fine catch in foul territory to end a Seminole threat. In the third inning Adametz threw out FSU freshman D.J. Stewart at home plate to quell another scoring opportunity.

Stewart ran Florida State out of another scoring threat in the top of the 5th inning when N.C. State centerfielder Brett Williams threw out the lumbering freshman at third base. Stewart had stole second base and tried to advance to third when Wolfpack catcher Brett Austin overthrew the play.

The Seminoles finally broke through with two outs in the top of the 8th inning when sophomore first baseman John Nogowski drilled a double to centerfield, driving in pinch runner J.J. Gould.

Avent allowed Rodon to work out of the jam and the lefthander rewarded his manager's faith by striking out Jose Brizuela to end the threat. Rodon went eight innings, yielding nine hits while striking out eight, walking four and one earned run.
