The Pack didn't give Billy Ray Mitchell his first offer but it's one he won't forget anytime soon.
Mitchell (6-3, 270 pounds) is an offensive guard from New Jersey but a lot of his interest has come from schools in different parts of the country. Take Southern Miss for instance. The Gulf Coast school offered Mitchell early this month. Tulane is another school from that part of the country that has offered.
MAC schools have offered as well and Mitchell recently got another big one, this one coming from the ACC.
NC State became the first school in a major conference to offer Mitchell not too long ago. Mitchell said no school is head and shoulders above the others but NC State is one he expects to have on his list for a long time.
"That was a surprise. They had been recruiting me a little bit but I was very excited when I heard about it. Maybe it wasn't so much a surprise but it was very exciting. Eddie Faulkner is the coach that offered but I haven't really gotten the chance to talk to him too much. He sounds like a great guy though.
"Because of NCAA rules he came to the school and I wasn't really allowed to talk to him."
Mitchell doesn't know much about the Pack or the coaches but one thing has stood out. The coaches seem like a closely knit bunch.
"When they offered me all the coaches were together and watching the Mayweather fight with their wives. That's a big plus because I like that family aspect."
The lineman said it's possible that he could visit NCSU soon but very unlikely. He said he's trying to focus on preparing for his senior season even though it's still a long way off.
In about one month he and his teammates will put the pads on and start to really go at it.
"I have to work around football workouts. I'm actually going to have to talk to my coach and parents to work something out."
In addition to NC State, Mitchell is receiving recruiting interest from Georgia Tech and Kentucky and received his second major offer this past week from Virginia Tech.
