QUOTEBOARD: Defeating William & Mary

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Here are some quotes from NC State and William & Mary following the Wolfpack's 1-0 win.

NC State Head Coach Elliott Avent
Opening Statement

"We always have great respect for the other team. We always try to focus, first and foremost, on what they were able to do to shut us down, and [John] Farrell – it's easy to see how he won 11 ballgames and lost only two. He had really good stuff, he was really competitive, kept the ball down in the zone and worked both sides of the plate very effectively. They played great defense for him and it was a great baseball game. I'm glad we came out on top."

If Carlos Rodon's recent performances have been as dominant as any pitcher he's ever coached…
"There's been some great pitchers in college baseball, and obviously there was another one on the other side of the field tonight. I hate to use a lot of terms, but I can say he's the best I've ever had. I don't use that term lightly or very often. The most incredible thing about his storyline tonight, for me, was how effortlessly he threw, and how he could corral his emotions with the emotion of the stadium. This is a very close-knit group of players. They all live together, they all love one another, they do a lot together and they want to win so much for one another. If you try to corral that into one night's game, and I look down at the box score and he didn't walk anybody, I think that's incredible."

On William & Mary pitcher John Farrell's performance…
"I can understand how he won 11 games, but I don't know how he lost three games. He would stack up anywhere. He's quite a young man, and for him to say he pitched his best of the year, that says everything about him. Not only does he have great stuff, but to rise to this occasion, he's quite competitive and he's going to have a great future in professional baseball after William & Mary. That was a good baseball team."

NC State Starting Pitcher Carlos Rodon
On his performance…
"It's a pretty big thing for our team. I've just been building confidence along the way and my defense backed me up. The defense has been bailing me out."

On his first postseason win…
"It's great to finally have a postseason win, but it's even better for our team. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully winning another one."

NC State Shortstop Trea Turner
On playing defense behind Carlos Rodon…

"I forget what inning it was, but he spotted up 94 [mph] against somebody, and everybody doesn't do that. It's special to watch him throw, especially when he's on like he has been lately. It's fun to play behind him because he's got a lot of energy and that transfers over to us."

If Carlos Rodon's performance helps him pick up his own game…
"It's easier to play behind him. It's fun to watch him pitch and you're always paying attention. You're not getting sidetracked by walks and long innings. I think he helps us as a team. It makes you lock in a little bit more."

NC State Third Baseman Grant Clyde
On having the only RBI in the game…

"It felt pretty good to come through in that situation. Going back to the UNC game, I had some at-bats where I wasn't fortunate enough to make it happen, but tonight I was fortunate enough to hit a ground ball through the middle and it ended up being the difference in the game I guess."

On playing defense behind Carlos Rodon…
"You can feel it from a pitcher when he's competing out there and you want to play better for him, and for Carlos, he's something else. When he runs out there, you know he's going to give it all he's got and so are we."

William & Mary Head Coach Jamie Pinzino
Opening Statement…

"I thought that was a great college baseball game. I told the guys after the game that's what it's supposed to be like at an NCAA Regional. A tight one run game between two guys that I thought absolutely pitched their hearts out and competed throughout that entire game. Obviously, it stinks to come out on the wrong end, but I'm proud of the way our guys competed. I thought they played hard and gave us an opportunity to win that game. Tip your hat to NC State, they played great and their guy pitched unbelievable and certainly deserved to win that game as well. In the end, they got a chopper up the middle with two outs to get that run home and we didn't get any of those in the few chances that we had to score runs off him. I thought we took some good swings in some situations, but you have to credit their defense they made some good plays with runners on base."

On facing NC State starting pitcher Carlos Rodon…
"They don't get much better than him, there's no doubt about it. That guy's going to get paid a lot of money in professional ball in a few years and there's good reason for that. What really made him tough was that he was able to manipulate his breaking ball based on the count and whether he was throwing it for a strike or as a pitch to chase. When you're facing a guy like that, you have to get as many guys in scoring position as you can but unfortunately we couldn't come up with the big hit at the right time."

On facing a top 10 team…
"We had our best guy on the mound tonight and we feel very confident with him out there and I think our guys do too. Every time he takes the mound he gives us a good chance to win. As far as whom you're playing and what kind of record they have, it just comes down to nine innings and how you play over the course of those innings. Unfortunately for us, they played a little better than we did but we certainly felt like we had a chance to win that game. I thought even in the ninth inning we took some good swings and put some hard balls in play."

William & Mary Starting Pitcher John Farrell
On his outing…

"They're a very good team. It was definitely one of my better outings stuff-wise, I was locating really well and I was just trying to keep them off balance. I knew I had to throw a great game going against the pitcher they were throwing and I like to play for that type of game when you have to be at your best or else you will lose. I felt like I was at my best, but he did just a little better to get the win."

On the NC State lineup…
"They're a very good lineup and very disciplined at the plate. They make it hard for you to pitch to them and to pitch to them efficiently you have to throw a lot of good pitches."

William & Mary Third Baseman William Shaw
On his outing…

"They're a very good team. It was definitely one of my better outings stuff-wise, I was locating really well and I was just trying to keep them off balance. I knew I had to throw a great game going against the pitcher they were throwing and I like to play for that type of game when you have to be at your best or else you will lose.
